Homework
As a school rooted in research, we have used current research to inform this policy. Using literature produced by the Education Endowment Fund, we have identified key facets that explain the purpose of homework and exemplify its importance. According to the EEF, homework has a positive impact on student progress (on average +5 months per student). This effect is particularly noticeable with students in secondary schools. Homework that is linked to classroom work tends to be more effective, demonstrating the importance of congruity between homework and the planned curriculum in school. The EEF highlighted that it is important to make the purpose of homework clear to students (e.g. to increase a specific area of knowledge, or to develop fluency in a particular area) to ensure students are aware of what it is they’re being asked to do and why it will benefit them.
Homework should be purposeful and support students in learning and accessing the curriculum better. It is therefore important to the school that homework is not set without purpose and subsequently this policy seeks to eradicate the unessential tasks and focus on homework that is sustainable and central to student knowledge and learning.
Types of Homework
All of the homework set by our departments aim to develop student mastery and/or extend their learning beyond the main curriculum.
Homework tasks can be categorised into the following types:
retrieval practice
quizzing (both through pre-sat quizzes and self-quizzing)
extended writing
research and discovery
reading
development of portfolio work
Where to find my homework?
All homework details will be found on Go4Schools and students should check daily to see what homework they have to complete that night.
A lot of our homework will be digital, using online platforms. As such, students will need access to the internet. If you do not have access at home, or have limited access, please get in touch with the school to find out more about how we can help.
