Welcome to Personal Development at Thurstable School.
Our Personal Development curriculum is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills and character they need to thrive in school, in their relationships and in the wider world. Through a carefully sequenced programme from Years 7–11, students develop their understanding of themselves, their relationships with others and their place in society, while learning how to make informed decisions, manage challenges and prepare for life beyond school.
Personal Development is a non-exam subject at Thurstable School at GCSE.
What is Personal Development?
Personal Development includes Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), Health Education, Citizenship, careers education and wider personal development. The curriculum is designed to build progressively, revisiting key themes at increasing levels of depth and maturity as students move through the school.
Personal Development is a non-examined subject at Thurstable School.
Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
RSE forms an important part of our Personal Development curriculum. It helps students develop the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to build healthy and respectful relationships, understand themselves and others, make informed decisions and keep themselves safe.
RSE is taught in an age-appropriate and carefully sequenced way across Years 7–11. We recognise that some topics may prompt questions or conversations at home, and we welcome parents and carers engaging with their children about their learning.
Parents and carers are provided with information about the curriculum and have the opportunity to view examples of the resources used. Parents also have a legal right to request that their child is withdrawn from certain elements of sex education, as outlined in our annual Right to Withdraw communication.
